It was the computer revolution, now it’s the Internet revolution. The 600C business card scanner and accompanying software is really cool. It can figure out what is the person’s name, title, company, address, phone and fax numbers, email and web address 100% of the time. It even does the for Spanish written cards. It can figure out black text on a white card and white text on a black card. It has difficulty with copper colored scripted text on a glossy black card stock which really kicks it up for the auto paint detailer who made it but the OCR software doesn’t like it. The software also does a great job of de-duping and interfacing with email clients like Outlook and Outlook Express. Furthermore Corex maintains a free web-based back up service for your cards, just in case the copy on your hard drive is lost. This was really cool…in 1995.
Off-line backup and PC hosted email clients are old school. There may still be a need for database backup for the single reason of database protection but with all the web-based, on-line contact managers now available that synchronize with your HTTP email, your smart or not so smart mobile phone as well as Outlook. It behooves, Corex..now DYMO to evolve and put their product back into the mainstream of how contact management is done today.
A note of caution: Cardscan business card scanners were the innovation of Corex. Dymo bought Corex. When a company in a buys another company in a totally different market, it’s because upper management wants to expand their market. Often the two very different management groups don’t get along at the budget allocation table and the new guy looses. I would wait to see if DYMO invests in the CardScan product line to bring it up to date before buying this product today.
